The study by YouGov pollsters for the Sunday Times found that 48 percent want Queen Elizabeth to stand down in favor of Charles if she is too ill to reign.
According to the survey, 53 percent believe the 87-year-old monarch should rule for life but only 43 percent of them stick to that belief even if the Queen is too ill for the job.
The results show a plunge in the support for the Queen’s reign from 64 percent in March to 53 percent now.
This comes as also 23 percent said they have their doubts about Charles’s ability to take over her mother’s responsibilities.
Presence of heir to the British throne Prince Charles at this year’s state opening of the parliament for the first time in 17 years unleashed a wave of speculation that he is preparing to take over the throne from his mother Queen Elizabeth.
The speculations were especially strong because the episode followed news that Charles will represent the Queen at the Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka in November.
