‘UK sexism higher than anywhere else’

A United Nations human rights expert says sexism in Britain is more ‘pervasive’ and ‘in your face’ than in any other country due to a boys’ club culture.

“Have I seen this level of sexist culture in other countries? It hasn’t been so in your face in other countries. I haven’t seen that so pervasively in other countries. I’m sure it exists but it wasn’t so much and so pervasive,” South African human rights expert, Rashida Manjoo, said in a UN Humans Rights Council (UNHRC) report on Tuesday.

The report documented violence against women in the UK, while highlighting sexual bullying and harassment as routine in UK schools.

“I’m not sure what gives rise to a more visible presence of sexist portrayals of women and girls in this country in particular – What is clear from these indications of portrayals of women and girls is that there is a boys’ club sexist culture. That exists and it does lead to perceptions about women and girls in this country,” the report said.

Majoo went on to highlight UK’s major problems regarding sexism including “the easy availability of porn, the use of social media including influencing young children around images…and harassment on the [London] Tubes.”

She said the government was responsible for battling the country’s sexist culture, recommending that UK schools should implement mandatory modules on sexism.

The UN expert has reported on violence against women in more than 10 countries since 2009, including Somalia, Zambia, Algeria, Jordan and America.

The report comes as Britain’s Scotland Yard police were recently accused of covering up “institutionalized sexism.”
