At least nine Ukrainian troops have been killed during clashes with pro-Russia protesters near the country’s eastern region of Donetsk.
According to reports eight Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 17 more were injured on Thursday, when pro-Russia protesters attacked a military checkpoint near Volnovaha in the Donetsk region.
Also in the Lugansk region, one Ukrainian soldier was killed and two more were injured during clashes with pro-Moscow protesters.
The recent clashes took place ahead of Ukraine’s upcoming presidential election due on May 25.
Ukraine’s acting President Oleksandr Turchynov launched military operations in southeastern Ukraine in mid-April in a bid to root out pro-Russia demonstrations.
On May 12, Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk declared independence following local referendums in which the regions’ residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Kiev.
The referendums followed a similar vote in Crimea in March that led to the reunification of the peninsula with the Russian Federation. Nearly 97 percent of participants in Crimea’s referendum voted for rejoining Russia.
According to a high-ranking UN official at least 127 people have been killed in a recent surge of violence in southern and eastern parts of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia has called on the United Nations (UN) to investigate a recent fire incident in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa that left dozens of pro-Russia protesters dead.
On May 2, at least 48 people were killed and 247 injured in the clashes between pro-Moscow and pro-Kiev demonstrators in Odessa and a fire in the port city’s trade union building.
