Pro-Russian mayor of Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv fights for his life after being seriously wounded by gunfire.
“Kharkiv mayor [Gennady Kernes] received a gunshot wound in the back. Now he is in the hospital emergency room on the operating table. Doctors are fighting for his life,” the city council said in a statement released on Monday on its website.
According to local media reports, the mayor was shot by unidentified gunmen and was taken to hospital at about 11:30 a.m. local time (8:30 GMT) on April 28.
In an interview with Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency, Irina Kutsepenko, a spokesperson for the Kharkiv city hall, confirmed the attack.
The recent development comes as pro-Russian forces have seized Ukraine’s eastern town of Kostyantynivka.
Kostyantynivka, with a population of 80,000, is located mid-way between the city of Slavyansk and the regional hub of Donetsk, both of which are already under the control of pro-Russian protesters.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said the activists have taken control of the city hall and police headquarters. The demonstrators have reportedly hoisted the flag of the Donetsk Republic above the buildings.
Pro-Russian protesters continue to occupy government, police and other administrative buildings in several cities and towns in eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.
On April 22, the Kiev government ordered a re-launch of its controversial “anti-terrorist operations” in the east and south regions in a bid to root out the pro-Russian demonstrations.
Pro-Russia protests gained momentum in Ukraine after Crimea declared independence from the former Soviet state and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.
