Sources close to Saakashvili informed the press that a group of unidentified men in camouflage stormed into the Suluguni restaurant at 10 Muzeiny Lane in Kiev at about 15:00 Kiev time on Monday. Saakashvili’s press attache Daryna Chyzh confirmed he was detained while he was dining.

The arrest was also confirmed by Saakashvili associate David Sakvarelidze in a comment to the TV news service TSN. “Mikheil was detained by special forces personnel, he was taken away in an unknown direction,” he said. According to TSN’s sources in the law enforcement agencies, Saakashvili was detained at the request of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

Saakashvili is reported to have been detained by people wearing masks and the insignia of the State Border Service. They arrived in three white Volkswagen vans. Georgia has repeatedly asked for the extradition of Saakashvili, and there are disputes over the validity of his Ukrainian passport and Ukraine’s right to extradite him. A short video clip – with pretty foul language, showing the incident – has been posted on Saakashvili’s official Facebook page.
