(Scroll down for video) An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace after being caught burning a Mormon book at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem, Israel.
The incident occurred at the same time police detained several Women of the Wall members for praying at the Western Wall while wearing Jewish ritual prayer shawls. As we reported yesterday, female Knesset Members joined the Women of the Wall to support their right to pray at the Western Wall, while the ultra-Orthodox Jew was arrested for burning the prayer book, according to video uploaded to the internet.
Five women were arrested by police on Thursday for wearing prayer shawls and tefillin at the Western Wall during a prayer service in the morning organized by the Women of the Wall.
After several hours of questioning, the women were brought to the Jerusalem Court, which is expected to issue restraining orders against them that would prevent them from praying at the Western Wall for a period of time. In the past, these restraining orders were issued against members of Women of the Wall, a group of activists who maintain a monthly prayer service at the wall.
Police initially thought the ultra-Orthodox Jewish man, known only by his first name Mordechai, arrested this morning, had set fire to a special prayer book of the women’s group they use at the Western Wall for their monthly first day of the month prayer service, but later said it turned out to be a Mormon book. During the prayer service, a group of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men interrupted the women screaming from the men’s section: “With our bodies, we will defend the Western Wall. Reform Jews, get out of here.”
Among the detained women were Leslie Sachs, director of the Women of the Wall, Bonnie Ras, deputy director of communications for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Silvie Rosenbaum, Sharona Kramer and Rabbi Valery Stessi, who was the first Conservative rabbi to be ordained in Israel, and the head of the congregation in Maayanot Jerusalem. The women are all Israeli citizens.
The women were taken to the police station in the Old City of Jerusalem for questioning.
“This monthly arrests must stop. The Western Wall should be a place of unity for the Jewish people, instead, every month Jewish people are hurt. The solution announced this week to open another section for non Orthodox Jews should be implemented as soon as possible,” Rebecca Fuchs, 30, of Jerusalem, Israel told YourJewishNews.com after reading about the arrests.
Two members of the Knesset, Michal Rosen and Tamar Zandberg joined the Women of the Wall prayer service on Thursday morning. They also wore prayer shawls, but because they enjoy parliamentary immunity, they cannot be detained.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
