“China plays a key role across the UN agenda, and I am eager to touch base in person with the new leadership,” Ban said at UN headquarters in New York .
He added that the talks would include “many matters of common concern, from Africa and the Korean Peninsula to climate change and the Millennium Development Goals.”
He also stated that extreme poverty, spread of HIV/AIDS and provision of elementary education to all children by 2015 will be discussed.
On Friday, the office of the UN Resident Coordinator in China also announced that the secretary-general launched the organization’s official WeChat account in China.
“I hope that this UN WeChat will enable many Chinese citizens to understand the latest news and information about what we are doing and why it matters,” said Ban.
WeChat is a mobile social networking platform which is designed by Chinese IT company Tencent. It has been launched in an attempt to increase the UN’s social media presence in China.
The UN Department of Public Information in New York will be in charge of managing the UN WeChat account will allow its subscribers to keep abreast with the organization’s work.
The secretary-general visits China from June 18 to 21 on his sixth visit to the country since his appointment in 2007.
