nsnbc : The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, offered to personally escort some 1,000 insurgents out of the surrounded pocket in eastern Aleppo. The Syrian government has repeatedly offered full amnesty for fighters who lay down their arms, safe passage to other “rebel-held” territories, and the opportunity for Syrian fighters to benefit from a full amnesty and to settle their status with Syrian authorities.
UN Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, on Thursday, made a passionate appeal to save eastern Aleppo from further fighting and warned that the entire inner city could be destroyed by December if fighting continues at the current rate.
De Mistura urged Islamist insurgents to take up the offer of the Syrian government and to leave the city. De Mistura stressed that he personally vouched for their safety and that he was willing to personally escort evacuating fighters out of the pocket in the eastern part of the city of Aleppo.
De Mistura also said that history would judge Syria and Russia if they used the presence of Islamist fighters to bomb the city. That said, only two days ago, the insurgents launched a barrage of missiles at Aleppo University. Both sides contribute to the destruction of the city.
De Mistura implied that could use the presence of the Islamist fighters as an “easy alibi” for destroying the rebel-held, besieged districts in eastern Aleppo where some 275,000 citizens including 100,000 women and children are trapped.
“The bottom line is in a maximum of two months, two and a half months, the city of eastern Aleppo at this rate may be totally destroyed. We are talking about the old city in particular,” Mr. de Mistura told a news conference in Geneva.
Addressing himself to the Russians and the Syrian government, he asked: “Are you really ready to continue this type of level of fighting using that type of weapons, and de facto destroy the whole city of eastern Aleppo … which is home to 275,000 people for the sake of eliminating 1,000 al Nusrah fighters?” The alternative was an immediate halt in the bombing in response to the Nusra fighters’ departure.
The Syrian government, for its part, repeatedly stressed that it has no interest at all in destroying the country’s economic and industrial capital. The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has gone to great length, and at great human cost, to secure safe corridors through which civilians as well as fighters who want to lay down their arms can evacuate. The problem many of those who have evacuated the city reported was that insurgents summarily execute evacuees, or extort large sums of money for free passage.
The Syrian government has repeatedly offered a full amnesty and safe passage for all fighters who lay down their arms. More specifically: Syrian as well as foreign fighters can choose between the following options. To be granted amnesty and provided safe passage to another “rebel-held area”. For foreign fighters to be granted full amnesty and to be guaranteed free passage out of Syria. For Syrians to be granted a full amnesty and to have their status settled with Syrian authorities. The final, and most probably terminal option would be to remain in eastern Aleppo and to fight to the end, protracting the destruction of the city and the misery of the civilians who are being held hostage by the “rebels”.
