UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has praised Iran’s role on the ongoing crisis in the Arab country, stressing that the Syrian crisis should be settled through political approaches.
In a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Beirut Mohammad Fat’hali on Friday, the UN diplomat also expressed concern over the developments in the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani.
Kobani and its surroundings have been under attack since mid-September, with the ISIL militants capturing dozens of nearby Kurdish villages. The Kurdish military sources say Kurdish fighters are gaining more ground against the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in and around Kobani, adding they managed to force out the militants from most of the city’s areas.
The Iranian ambassador, for his part, pointed to the ISIL terrorist acts in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, calling on the United Nations to pay special attention to regional countries.
“The situation of people in Kobani is alarming and all of us should help them, but all countries must respect international regulations on non-interference in others’ affairs,” Fat’hali said.
The ISIL advance in the region has forced tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds to flee into Turkey, which is a stone’s throw from the border city of Kobani.
Turkey continues to block any delivery of military, medical or humanitarian assistance into Kobani where the ISIL terrorists are feared to be aiming at massive bloodletting.
The Iranian diplomat further pointed to the so-called US-led coalition against the ISIL terrorists and said it has so far failed to show a firm determination to counter the militants.
The US-led bombing campaign against ISIL began on August 8 in Iraq, and since late September, the US and its Arab allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL positions inside Syria as well, without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.
