A previous drat resolution was vetoed by permanent UNSC member Russia on Thursday. However, journalists at the UN headquarter in New York City report that a slightly amended draft resolution was circulated among UN diplomats, with some of them reportedly requesting that the revised draft will be tabled and discussed on Friday.

The text of the revised draft hasn’t yet been made publicly available. However, the revised draft reportedly softens the language in a key provision to say the Council “demands” a ceasefire instead of “it decides”.

The Russian Federation had vetoed the previous draft calling the resolution unrealistic. “We are ready to study the resolution that we were proposed to adopt, but we offered a very strict wording that would say that the ceasefire regime does not cover ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and the groups that support them and regularly shell the residential neighborhoods of Damascus,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters while in Belgrade on Thursday.

Sweden is a co-sponsor of the resolution, along with Kuwait. Sweden’s UN Ambassador Olaf Skoog reportedly also hinted at a Friday vote. The draft resolution would impose a ceasefire within 72 hours after being adopted and delivery of aid and medical evacuations to begin 48 hours later. Calls for a truce have increased with rising violence in the country. More than 400 people have been killed in the past five days in opposition and terrorist-held Eastern Ghouta.
