UN set to reopen aid centers in Gaza

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said on Monday that it had made the decision after receiving assurances that its buildings and staff would be safe.

Adnan Abu Hasna, UNRWA’s Gaza media adviser, said the agency had received “assurances from the relevant parties over the safety of its staff.”

Twenty aid centers in the besieged coastal territory stopped food deliveries on April 4 after Palestinian protesters opposing aid cutbacks stormed UNRWA’s a headquarters in Gaza.

“The solution is not to attack the buildings or the workers, and not to close the buildings or terrify the work routine of these buildings. Everyone accepted this so the UNRWA decided to open its doors,” Abu Hasna stated.

The UN aid agency provides food to 800,000 Palestinians, nearly half the population of the impoverished enclave. It also provides assistance to an estimated five million Palestinian refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied West Bank.

Gaza has been blockaded by Israel since June 2007, a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.
