UN to probe Eritrea rights abuses

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has set up an inquiry commission to look into human rights abuses in the African state, Eritrea.

The three-member panel is due to report back to the UN body in one year, BBC reported on Saturday.

The UNHRC censured in a statement the “widespread and systematic” human rights violations in the African nation, including torture and other cruel punishments.

Eritrea, however, rejected the UN statement.

This is while human rights organizations have called the country a “giant prison.”

British rights group, Amnesty International, alleged last year that nearly 10,000 Eritreans had been imprisoned for political reasons since independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

The government of Eritrea, however, rejected the allegation.

Earlier this month, four Eritrean Catholic bishops took the rare step of publicly criticizing life in the African country, describing  it as “desolate.”

Young Eritrean men are obligated to perform national service until the age of 40, reportedly prompting an estimated 3,000 to flee the country each month.

The use of conscription was also censured by the UNHRC, along with alleged restrictions on the freedom of expression, religion and peaceful assembly.

All private media have been shut down as well.
