Unions NSW to attend IRC teacher hearings

Unions NSW has been called before the state’s industrial watchdog as the NSW education department tries to stop a planned 24-hour teachers strike.

Public sector workers are planning a mass rally outside state parliament in Sydney on Thursday, in protest at expected job cuts in Tuesday’s state budget and the government’s 2.5 per cent wage cap.

The government on Monday took action in the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) to stop the state’s 70,000 teachers holding the 24-hour strike as part of the rally.

Expressing concern about the effect of the strike on parents, Justice Francis Marks queried whether the industrial action could be held on a Sunday, before adjourning the hearing until 9.30am (AEST) on Tuesday.

He called on a representative from Unions NSW to attend the hearing, to give details of Thursday’s protest.

Both the government and the NSW Teachers Federation declined to comment about the ongoing IRC hearings.

Comment was being sought from Unions NSW.

The NSW budget, the O’Farrell government’s first, will be handed down on Tuesday.
