“As I was running up to the gate, the gate agent saw me coming and
shouted, ‘Mr. Drake? We’ve been expecting you’,” he said. “That’s
when I knew they had conspired to help me. She waved me onto the plane
without looking at my boarding pass.”
The captain had radioed ahead to ask for the plane to delay departure.
“Had I missed my flight to Lubbock, I would not have been able to tell my
mom goodbye,” Mr Drake said.
He went straight to the hospital, where he spent the night with his mother,
father and brother. She died the next morning.
“At one point she opened her eyes, and I think she recognized me,”
said Mr Drake. “Around 4 am she had a real moment of coherence, a last
rally, although we didn’t know it at the time. It was the last time.”
