A US political commentator has rejected contradictory claims as “preposterous” that Syria is supporting the Takfiri militants fighting in Iraq and the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki at the same time.
Such reports by US media are meant to cover up US “embarrassments,” Jeff Steinberg, senior editor of Executive Intelligence Review, said in a phone interview with Press TV on Thursday
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Wednesday that the US had “no reason to dispute” reports of Syrian strikes on Iraqi territory against the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) who has seized control of some key northern Iraqi cities.
At the same time, there were reports that the Syrian government was working with ISIS, Steinberg said, which are “absolutely preposterous.”
“It reminds me of coverage that came out at the time the US-British invasion of Iraq when it was claimed that Saddam Hussein had ties to al-Qaeda and was behind the 9/11 attacks,” he said.
Steinberg said US claims regarding ISIS and Syria are obviously contradictory and false. “You can’t have it both ways and it’s becoming more and more obvious that the whole US policy has been a complete failure, a complete fiasco, and has put US in bed with the most brutal and savage terrorist organizations in the world.”
“These are just crisp war-time propaganda to conceal the fact that the US is on the one hand supposedly babbling against ISIS and trying to defend the Maliki government in Iraq,” Steingberg said. “And at the same time, ISIS is part of the opposition in Syria that the US is backing,” he added.
The US is “supporting various kinds of real dark-age forces” for its own interests, while losing grip on their operations and influence, the analyst noted.
This is “disgusting fraud that gets perpetuated over time to cover up for the embarrassment of the US government being in bed with basically real barbarian dark-age terrorists.”
ISIS grew out of a Syrian insurgency which has been shored up by the United States and some of its Arab allies to fight the Assad government.
