US election 2012: Jon Huntsman fails to convert late surge in support

Mr Huntsman has maintained throughout his campaign that those challenges will
come “from over the Pacific, in cities I have lived in” as ambassador to
Singapore and China. In a debate last weekend he even delivered a passage in
Mandarin.

But he has been unable to attract significant national support based on his
foreign policy and executive credentials. Tim Miller, his spokesman, claimed
on Tuesday night that the campaign would survive a third-place finish in New
Hampshire and perform well elsewhere.

“We have a stronger organisation in South Carolina and Florida than people
realise,” he told The Daily Telegraph. He was later overheard reflecting: “I
wish we’d had another day”.
