Also, several of the front-runner’s more conservative rivals were campaigning
hard to stop him making it three wins in a row.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum went after Romney at a campaign stop
in Hilton Head.

“My message is not driven by polls, it’s driven by conviction. If you’re
looking for someone you can trust, someone who’s an authentic conviction
politician, who can get things done and win tough elections in the states we
have to win, then South Carolina needs to speak loudly.” Santorum said.

“We’ve won. He’s never won. He’s never proven that he can attract the
kind of voters we need to win in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida. I have. I’ve
done it. Help us out,” he continued, referring to Romney.

Since 1980, every winner of the South Carolina Republican presidential primary
has gone on to win the party nomination.
