US House to vote to cut Iran oil exports

Lawmakers are due to vote on the bill on Wednesday which aims to reduce Iran’s oil exports by another 1 million barrels per day within a year.

The measure is expected to pass overwhelmingly in the lower chamber.

The bill, however, will not immediately become law as no companion legislation has yet passed in the Senate, Reuters reports.

The Senate Banking Committee is expected to consider its version of a bill in September and then lawmakers in both chambers will convene for a vote.

The House bill risks angering China and India, the biggest buyers of Iran’s crude oil, and could push global oil prices higher.

At present the United States issues “waivers” to China and India allowing them to buy oil from Iran but the bill would cut the amount they are allowed to purchase.

The move also signals a divide between some members of Congress and the administration of President Barack Obama.

Last week, 131 US lawmakers wrote a letter to President Obama, asking the White House to opt for diplomacy in dealing with Tehran following the victory of Hassan Rohani in Iran’s June 14th presidential election.

The US Treasury Department last Thursday lifted some sanctions on a number of medical devices that can be exported to Iran without special permission.

The United States, the Israeli regime and their European allies accuse Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program. Washington and the European Union have imposed a series of illegal unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic’s oil and financial sectors.

Iran rejects the allegation saying as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
