The so-called X-band radar, which can reportedly track down the trajectory of a ballistic missile, would enable US forces to launch ground- and sea-based intercept missiles upon detecting a ballistic missile, Japanese press agencies reported on Sunday.
The radar system is to be constructed on an “Air Self-Defence Force base” in the Sea of Japan coastal city of Kyotango, northwest of Kyoto, Kyodo News and Jiji Press agencies reported, quoting unidentified sources.
According to the Kyodo report, the site for the radar system was selected based on American assumptions that a potential North Korean missile targeting US Island territories of Guam or Hawaii would likely fly over western or central parts of Japan.
The development comes following a Friday meeting in Washington between new Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Barack Obama, during which they reportedly confirmed that the two governments would collaborate in building the radar installation.
This will be the second X-band radar system constructed in Japan. The first one was installed in the country’s northern Aomori prefecture.
