US police kill 4 in separate shootings

The first killing occurred on Saturday in San Jose, where two officers fatally shot an unnamed man who collided with three patrol cars during a high-speed chase. The officers said the man “presented an imminent danger” and possibly was armed.

In a separate incident on the same day in Daly City, officers chased the driver of a stolen car to San Francisco. The suspect brandished a gun at officers who then opened fire and killed him.

The latest fatal shooting took place on Sunday in the city of Hayward, California, when motorist Arthur Pakman and his passenger tried to run down a police officer during a traffic stop. The officer opened fire at both suspects, hitting the passenger who was later taken to a hospital where he died, said local authorities.

The driver had been detained and charged on suspicion of assault on a police officer and homicide resulting from the death of his passenger.

The final shooting started on Saturday night in Union City where a man pulled a gun on officers during a traffic stop. Officers shot the man, critically injuring him. He later died at the hospital.

This comes as 33-year-old ex-LAPD police officer Christopher Dorner went on a killing spree last month, seeking “revenge” for racism and being fired by the police force in 2008 after reporting a case of police abuse.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.

The US has an average of 87 deaths each day as a result of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
The year 2012 was a record setting year for gun sales in the US.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the country at a cost of two to three billion dollars.
