A senior Russian diplomat has accused the United States of resorting to Cold War-era “Iron Curtain” policies by imposing sanctions against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine.
The statement by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov came after the US slapped a new round of sanctions on Russia, targeting President Vladimir Putin’s ‘inner circle’ on Monday.
“This is a revival of a system created in 1949 when Western countries essentially lowered an ‘Iron Curtain’, cutting off supplies of high-tech goods to the USSR and other countries,” Ryabkov said.
He added that the US is “essentially chasing itself into a dark, dusty closet of a bygone era.”
The Russian official also condemned the sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union (EU) on Russia as “illegal.”
Ryabkov accused the EU of “complete lack of understanding” about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
“Are you not ashamed?” he asked the 28-nation European bloc.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the EU has shown subservience to the US over the crisis in Ukraine.
The EU has imposed travel bans and asset freezes on 15 Russian and pro-Russian Ukrainian figures, including Dmitry Kozak, a deputy prime minister who is in charge of integrating Ukraine’s Crimea region; Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian armed forces General Staff; and Igor Sergun, the head of the secretive military intelligence service.
Tensions between Western powers and Moscow heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and became part of Russia following a referendum on March 16, in which almost 97 percent of the participants voted for rejoining the Russian Federation, with a turnout of over 83 percent.
