“I have let President Obama know that I will not serve a second term as secretary of the US Department of Transportation,” LaHood said in a statement released on Tuesday.
Serving as the only Republican cabinet member in the Obama administration, LaHood said he plans to stay on “until my successor is confirmed to ensure a smooth transition for the Department and all the important work we still have to do.”
The White House did not release information on prospective candidates, but experts have pointed to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, and National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman as the contenders.
This comes as the Obama administration has moved to replace other cabinet-level positions including the secretary of state, defense secretary, treasury secretary, commerce secretary, labor secretary, as well as the White House Chief of Staff and CIA director.
Obama has recently come under the spotlight for not accepting more women and minorities into his Cabinet.
