US Vice President Joe Biden has warned Russia with tougher sanctions if it seeks to undermine Ukraine’s presidential election this Sunday amid heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow.
Biden threatened Moscow with “imposing greater costs” after speaking with Romanian President Traian Basescu in Bucharest, Romania.
“If Russia undermines these elections … we must remain resolute and impose greater costs to Russia and (be) equally resolute to invest in the NATO alliance,” Biden said on Wednesday.
The US vice president arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday as part of the Obama administration’s campaign to reassure European allies of strong US support in the West’s confrontation with Russia.
Tensions between the two countries heightened after Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.
The US and the EU have already imposed travel bans and asset freezes on dozens of Russian officials and banks over the country’s reunification with Crimea and have threatened to target entire sectors of the Russian economy if other parts of Ukraine rejoin Russia.
Last week, top American and British diplomats announced a new threat to sanction Russian business and energy sectors if Sunday’s presidential election in Ukraine is disrupted.
Russia has warned to take retaliatory measures if the West continues its policy of sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine. Moscow believes that the election cannot be held amid “the thunder of guns” in Ukraine.
Pro-Russian protests continue to grip eastern Ukraine. Pro-Russian leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine insist the presidential polls will not be held in those territories, where the United Nations refugee agency says 10,000 civilians have so far been displaced.
