‘VA secretary holds back some truth’

A veteran political commentator says the Veterans Affairs assessment message to Congress was correct but the acting directory did not say everything.

Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs Sloan Gibson on Wednesday offered an assessment of the severity of the situation in the veterans organization and asked for billions more dollars to address the issues.

Gibson’s grim message to senators included the state of VA healthcare, a system he portrayed as plagued by widespread wrongdoing, staff intimidation and shortages of clinical staff.

Speaking to Press TV in a phone interview on Thursday, Gene Chip Tatum of Veterans Today said the new VA acting directory is “partially correct, however he’s holding back a lot and trying to protect the veterans organization.”

“We understand the seriousness of the problems we face,” Gibson said in his first appearance on Capitol Hill since taking the reins at VA after the resignation of Gen. Eric Shinseki. “We own them. We’re taking decisive action to begin to resolve them.”

Both the previous VA head Shinseki and Gibson are lying before Congress in the interest of their organization and against the veterans, said Tatum.

“I’m involved in their organization,” he said. “I’m involved with Veterans Against the VA and Corruption (VATVA).”

The actions by the VA are “absolutely illegal and the only way I see as a veteran and as a director of VATVA to get anything done here for our veterans, is to start pressing criminal charges against these corrupt individuals who are acting in a mode that takes lives,” he added.

In his speech, Gibson added that VA will need an extra $17.6 billion in funding between now and 2017. The proposal would address the causes of the scandal that has exploded in recent months over long wait times for medical care and fraudulent scheduling practices used to conceal delays.

“These funds address only the current shortfalls in clinical staff, space, information technology and purchase care necessary to provide timely, high quality care,” Gibson said.
