Venezuela’s PSUV regime arrests more parliament-appointed judges as MUD calls for new strike

nsnbc : Venezuelan intelligence officials arrested two more judges who had been appointed by the legislative branch of government on Tuesday. The Roundtable of Democratic Unity (MUD) won an absolute majority in Venezuela’s National Assembly before it was suspended by the Supreme Court over alleged “contempt”. The MUD and civic organizations call for a two-day strike Wednesday and Thursday.

The crackdown on “dissident” judges comes after the PSUV dominated Supreme Court, earlier this month, slammed Attorney general Ortega with a travel ban, an asset freeze, and limited the powers of the office of the prosecutor to only being able to prosecute cases that have been approved by “a sitting judge”.

In a televised speech, Maduro threatened to arrest judges while he also blasted U.S. President Donald Trump and a number of Latin American leaders for their statements “against his PSUV administration’s plan to rewrite the 1999 Constitution that was adopted under the late Hugo Chavez.

However, the increasingly erratic Maduro who previously complained about “traitors everywhere” without reflecting upon his and his administrations’ own flaws – and arguably attempts to pull of a constitutional coup – claimed:

“‘The imperial right wing believes it can give orders to Venezuela. The only ones who give orders here are the people. This time next week [on Sunday, July 30] Venezuelans will be voting for a Constituent Assembly.’

Apparently, Maduro does not recognize the voters who gave the MUD an absolute majority in parliament as “the people”. The MUD, with the support of the Worker’s Confederation as well as private sector businesses, and a cohort of other political and grassroots organizations has announced a two-day national strike this week aimed at pressuring Maduro to cancel the controversial July 30 vote on the creation of a the body that will be charged with rewriting the country’s constitution.

“We are calling out the entire people, all groups in society, for a 48-hour strike” on Wednesday and Thursday, lawmaker Simon Calzadilla said. Calzadilla said a protest march on Friday, following the strike, will demand that Maduro officially scrap the vote.
