Veterans Uninformed about Medicare

by Brooke Self

BARSTOW • Medicare eligible, senior-aged military veterans may disproportionately be making costly Medicare mistakes, according to initial results of a study conducted by the company 65 Incorporated.

About 75 percent of survey respondents said they did not know military veterans late to enroll in Medicare would incur a late enrollment penalty.

In addition, about 20 percent of veterans have been informed that they need not worry about Medicare as long as they had VA benefits, according to the survey.

A few veterans at the Barstow Senior Center said that they weren’t informed about their Medicare benefits.

“The only way you’re going to find out about something is if you personally inquire because they don’t tell you anything,” said 64-year-old Barstow veteran, Eugene Ruble. “I think a lot of these government organizations are keeping everything too close to their vests.”
