If people don’t want a Liberal government they should vote Green rather than the mess that is Labor – that’s the blunt message from Australian Greens leader Bob Brown.
“It’s Greens if you are concerned about Abbott, because Labor has temporarily left the field of responsible government,” he told journalists in Brisbane on Saturday.
“It’s up to them as to how well they get back onto that field after Monday.
“The Greens intend to continue to be a force for stability.”
Senator Brown positioned his party as a credible alternative to the coalition, saying the main point of difference was that the Greens had found savings to cover the cost of everything they wanted to do.
“The difference between us and Tony Abbott is he’s going to have a $70 billion black hole. We don’t,” he said.
But the Greens, who currently hold the balance of power in teh Senate, would try to work with whoever held government, Senator Brown said.
“If we got an Abbott government because of Labor’s shenanigans … then we’ll work to get a dividend in very difficult circumstances for the economy … and for the environment.”
The Greens party room will meet on Monday after the Labor leadership ballot to decide their response.
