In a tragic accident, an elderly woman was killed in apartment building fire in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York.

Firefighters were called to an apartment building at 51 Ross Street, which is heavily populated by ultra-orthodox Jews.  The fire came from the twelfth floor. Luckily, it did not spread to the other apartments in that building.

Sadly, an elderly woman was found dead in her apartment on the 12th floor.
The woman was identified as 73-year-old Nelly Bermudez, who lived alone. When the fire broke out she had no chance to escape, “She could not get out,” Deputy Fire Chief, Vincent Mandala, said.
Firefighters said that the fire broke out inside the 12th floor apartment, on Ross Street, near Wythe Avenue.

According to reports, the fire was contained to the bed of the victim. The woman, who lived alone,


was found lying on a mattress that had been burned to the bed springs.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and no other injuries were reported.
The exact cause of the fire was still under investigation.

According to reports, firefighters believe a carelessly discarded cigarette may have led to a fire that killed Bermudez, inside her apartment.
Firefighters suspect that Bermudez may have fallen asleep while smoking.
