Warwick Foundation named ball benficiary

A charity supporting young adults with cancer will be a beneficiary of this year’s Press Gallery Midwinter Ball at Parliament House.

Press gallery president Phillip Hudson on Monday announced The Warwick Foundation would receive a slice of the cash raised at the black-tie event.

The foundation was chosen because of the support it provided to AAP Canberra reporter Peter Veness, who died on January 15 this year after a long battle against a rare form of brain cancer. He was 27.

Mr Hudson said he was confident the 13th ball, which brings together people from the worlds of politics, journalism and business, would take total charitable donations over the years past the $2 million mark.

Guests will bid at auction for time with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Foreign Minister Bob Carr, former prime minister Kevin Rudd and former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Turnbull will take up to six people sailing on Sydney Harbour on an “ancient” couta yacht.

Launching the ball on Monday, Mr Turnbull said it would have an Italian theme, La Dolce Vita.

“You can just imagine that this year, in this tough environment, there will be no coins left in the fountain because (Treasurer) Wayne (Swan) scooped them all up trying to get to his surplus,” he joked.

Comedian Julian Morrow, best known as a member of The Chaser team, will be master of ceremonies at the ball on June 27.
