Chance the Rapper streamed a police traffic stop live to his Instagram followers to ensure officers treated him fairly.
Chance, real name Chancelor Bennett, and his two-year-old daughter Kensli were passengers in a car driven by the tot’s mother Kirsten Corley when they were stopped by Illinois State Police officers on Sunday afternoon, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
In a live stream, subsequently deleted from Chance’s Instagram account but posted by fans to YouTube, the hip-hop star was shown sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle talking to a camera.
“Just want y’all to be here in case it gets out of hand,” Chance said. “Should be good though. Should be straight. I have great faith in humanity and the men and women that put on the badge, but, you know, you can’t be too careful.”
The rapper and activist, 24, said that although he respected, “men and women that put on the uniform”, he believes “policing as a system is disproportionately racist and oppressive”.
The “No Problem” star stated that he had no weapons or drugs in the vehicle and was merely returning from church.
Illinois State Police officials told the Sun-Times Corley was stopped for a moving violation and was issued a warning.
Chance has repeatedly criticized the Chicago Police Department in the past, in particular, drawing attention to the case of Laquan McDonald, the 17-year-old fatally shot in 2014.
Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder over McDonald’s shooting.
