‘We All Know Angelina is Another Amber Heard’

Comment: I disagree with this article that this is a trend against women; it is a trend against LIARS.

The legal victory of Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard might have long-resonating consequences that will be felt in Hollywood and the justice system. On the heels of Depp’s court verdict, Brad Pitt has emerged with a new filing in his lawsuit against ex-wife Angelina Jolie regarding their winery, Miraval.

The argument is that Jolie sold her interest in the company to “a hostile third-party competitor bent on taking control of Miraval,” who just happens to be Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler, via court documents obtained by Us Weekly. Pitt’s lawyers argue that “through the purported sale, Jolie sought to inflict harm on Pitt. Jolie knew and intended that Shefler, and his affiliates would try to control the business Pitt had built and to undermine Pitt’s investment in Miraval.”

While that all seems like a lot of post-divorce financial wrangling, some social media users are sounding the alarm on a trend against women. One Twitter account wrote, “sorry but you’re watching disgusting men (kyle rittenhouse) abusive men (brad pitt, marilyn manson) be further emboldened by depp’s bullsh*t legal moves and you still are so empty headed that you think his win was a good thing???” Culture writer Ella Dawson, who has been discussing the Depp topic heavily on her account added, “Brad Pitt fans want him to pursue legal action against his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie. Precedent has been set.” And Pitt fans are already suggesting the Oscar winner hire Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez, who was recently elevated to partner at the Brown Rudnick law firm. “Brad Pitt should hire Camille Vasquez as we all know Angelina is another Amber Heard,” wrote a Twitter account. (Jolie accused Pitt of domestic violence in their marriage even though the actor was cleared of child abuse allegations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Child and Family Services back in 2016.)

The way people are reacting to the Depp verdict (remember they were both found to have defamed each other) should send chills up and down domestic abuse survivors’ spines. There is a feeling of empowerment by some that could change legal outcomes for years to come — and it’s why the Depp “win” really wasn’t a win at all.

Is Angelina Jolie next???

Why Hollywood Can’t Stand Angelina Jolie
Getty Images
BY JESSICA SAGER/UPDATED: FEB. 2, 2018 3:20 PM EDT
For a long time, Angelina Jolie seemed like the Queen of Hollywood: She was married to Brad Pitt, she was an action star and an Oscar winner, she could slay on the red carpet and hang out at the U.N. with equal aplomb.

However, in the last few years, there seems to have been a turn in how Jolie is perceived by Hollywood and the rest of the world. What happened?

The Cleopatra debacle
Getty Images
Producer Scott Rudin was exposed as hating Jolie in the infamous 2014 Sony email hack when messages leaked about Jolie’s work in a Cleopatra biopic that never came to fruition.

Rudin was frustrated that Jolie was set on David Fincher directing the still-hypothetical film because Rudin wanted Fincher to keep his focus on Steve Jobs (2015). In a furious email chain with then-Sony president Amy Pascal, Rudin wrote (via Defamer), “I’m not destroying my career over a minimally talented spoiled brat who thought nothing of shoving this off her plate for eighteen months so she could go direct a movie … I have no desire to be making a movie with her, or anybody, that she runs and that we don’t… There is no movie of Cleopatra to be made (and how that is a bad thing given the insanity and the rampaging ego of this spoiled woman and the cost of this movie is beyond me) … I have zero appetite for the indulgence of spoiled brats and I will tell her this myself if you don’t.”

She can be difficult to work with

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) director Doug Liman told the Times (via Express), “When I was shooting a scene on Mr. & Mrs. Smith and I had one idea of how the scene should play out… Angelina Jolie had a different idea. I said, ‘OK, we could sit here and argue, but we’re wasting time, let’s just shoot it both ways.’ And she was like, ‘But, then you’ll just use your way in the editing room,’” he recalled. “And I was like, ‘Well, I am the director. I might. But I’m going to use the way that’s actually best for the movie. I have no ego in this.’” He added, “That conversation would never happen with Tom [Cruise]. Tom would be just like, ‘You want it upside down? Right side up? I’ll give it to you every possible way for the editing room. I want you to have as many choices as possible so you can make the best movie possible that you can make.’”

It wasn’t the last time she drove a movie staff to near-madness. The Hollywood Reporter said that 20th Century Fox pulled the plug on Jolie’s performance in Murder On The Orient Express (2017) after she made too many demands for script changes. Producer Jon Peters also told The Hollywood Reporter that he bailed on a Jolie project, Africa, in which she had been slated to direct Pitt, because she wanted to double the film’s budget. “[It] should have cost $60 million and grew to $130 million,” Peters said. “Angelina just wanted to do it really big.”

She may not actually be a box office draw
Getty Images
Jolie first made waves in Hollywood with her Golden Globe-winning turn in HBO TV movie Gia (1999), then with her Oscar-winning performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999). She soon launched a career as an action star in hits including Gone In 60 Seconds (2000), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life (2003), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), and Salt (2010), as well as the titular misunderstood fairy in Maleficent (2014).

While all of these were massively successful, Jolie may not actually be that bankable as a movie star overall, because a lot of her other films were actually box office duds: Playing By Heart (1998), Hell’s Kitchen (1998), The Bone Collector (1999), Pushing Tin (1999), Original Sin (2001), Life Or Something Like It (2002), Beyond Borders (2003), Taking Lives (2004), Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow (2004), Alexander (2004), The Good Shepherd (2006), Beowulf (2007), A Mighty Heart (2007), Changeling (2008), The Tourist (2010), and By The Sea (2015) all lost money at the box office. If there’s anything Hollywood hates, it’s an actor who seems like a poor financial investment.

Her manager was problematic
Getty Images
Jolie’s manager, Geyer Kosinski, may have soured her relationships with much of Hollywood. Deadline said Kosinski is “known to be very controlling, very secretive, and very involved with his clients’ lives (and hate talking to the media).” Page Six reports that Kosinski “blocked her from the Hollywood community,” which may have hindered her relationships with studios and other stars — and Kosinski reportedly also blew a deal for Jolie to star in Gravity (2013), with the role eventually going to Sandra Bullock and earning her an Oscar.

She hardly has any famous friends
Getty Images
In 2011, Jolie confessed to Marie Claire, “I stay home a lot. I’m not really social … I’ll talk to my family. I talk to Brad … But I don’t know, I don’t have a lot of friends I talk to. He is really the only person I talk to.”

Meanwhile, ex-husband Brad Pitt’s pals rubbed her the wrong way, too, according to Radar Online — especially Pitt’s Fight Club (1999) co-star Edward Norton. “Angelina has always thought Ed’s a shallow underachiever who brings out the immature side of Brad, and she’s not impressed by his wife,” a source told Radar Online. “It’s something Brad’s tried to reason with her about over and over, but she’s knocked him back time and again, saying these people aren’t good enough for them.” Melissa Etheridge also claimed that Jolie seemed to isolate Pitt from his own friends.

She ‘stole’ Billy Bob Thornton from Laura Dern
Getty Images

Jolie met her second husband, actor Billy Bob Thornton, in 1999 on the set of Pushing Tin (1999), while Jolie was dating Timothy Hutton and Thornton was engaged to live-in girlfriend Laura Dern, People reported. They moved quickly and were married in May 2000, which shattered Dern. “I left our home to work on a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again,” Dern told Talk magazine (via ABC News). “It’s like a sudden death … For no one has there been any closure or clarity.”

Of course, it’s important to note that it takes two to tango, and Thornton was the one who ultimately cheated on and ditched Dern — but the stigma stuck much more firmly to Jolie.

Brangelina had shady beginnings
Getty Images
Again, you can’t really steal a man from another woman or vice-versa — but Pitt was the second consecutive man in a committed relationship (this time a marriage) who was linked to Jolie under sketchy circumstances. Though Pitt and Jolie initially swore up and down that nothing untoward in their relationship occurred while he and Jennifer Aniston were married, Jolie told The New York Times in October 2008 that she was stoked to eventually show her and Pitt’s kids the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) because “Not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love.” In December 2008, Pitt told Rolling Stone that he and Jolie “fell in love” while filming.

The timing here is important: Us Weekly points out that Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) was filmed in January 2004. Pitt and Aniston didn’t separate until January 2005 — almost a full year after Pitt and Jolie, by their own admission, became an item. Because this was the second time Jolie was involved in an overlapping relationship with a man who’d already been committed to another famous lady, odds are that many of her celebrity peers (at least married female ones) may regard her with some side-eye.

People in and out of Hollywood love Jennifer Aniston
Getty Images
Aniston is America’s sweetheart, while many regard Jolie as a bit of a minx. It turns out, there’s a psychological reason for that.

Media Psychology Research Center director Dr. Pamela Rutledge explained to Bustle why so many people seem to be Team Aniston. “There were many expressions of her being ‘wronged’ by Brad Pitt leaving her, especially since it looked like he was involved with Angelina Jolie while still married to Aniston. This was amplified by Jolie’s seductress, iconoclast image.” Psychologist Gregory Kushnick added that Aniston’s rep as a “gentle, innocent” girl next door sharply contrasts with Jolie’s public perception as a “naughty, sharp-jawed sex symbol who has the power to make men do bad things… Given the type of woman Jennifer Aniston represents, the public will naturally side with her over a woman who is viewed as aggressive or seductive.”

Jolie and Aniston’s Hollywood peers are still human — and combined with Jolie’s other controversies, it’s not too surprising that many in Tinsel Town would side with Team Aniston, even more than a decade later.

Her blood-wearing, brother-kissing past
Getty Images
Jolie’s past may haunt her in Hollywood. For a refresher (courtesy of The Daily Mail), there was the cutting and knife play, the blood-scrawled shirt at her first wedding to actor Jonny Lee Miller, the making out with her brother at the 2000 Oscars, the blood vials she shared with Billy Bob Thornton, the alleged sexual flings in kindergarten, and the knife play.

The National Enquirer (via Radar Online) unearthed footage of Jolie allegedly filmed by her drug dealer Franklin Meyer in 1998 after supposedly scoring cocaine and heroin from him. While Jolie majorly cleaned up her act from her checkered history, those who work with her may have forgiven, but not forgotten, her bizarre, dark past.

She tried to smear Brad Pitt in the press …
Getty Images

After she filed for divorce from Pitt in September 2016, sources alleged to Page Six that Jolie was on a mission to ruin Pitt’s otherwise perfect Hollywood golden boy reputation, even assembling a team to smear his name. The site reports that Jolie enlisted Lady Arminka Helic, a member of the U.K. House of Lords and a former adviser to Britain’s ex-Foreign Secretary William Hague, and Chloe Dalton, a former aide to British ex-Foreign Secretary William Hague.

One source said, “They have been calling all the networks and news outlets, placing stories that he was cheating, drunk, on drugs, out of control and abusive, which Brad denies … They were with Angelina in LA as she filed for divorce, and advised her how to handle things … which was basically a scorched-earth approach. It’s no coincidence that since they went back to London, things have calmed down.”

Insiders also told People that Jolie’s moves in her divorce from Pitt were deliberate in an effort to make the proceedings public. In December 2016, Jolie filed court documents publicizing her and Pitt’s custodial agreement, a move that infuriated the actor and those close to him. “There is absolutely nothing different about the situation today as opposed to yesterday as opposed to when this agreement was put into place,” a source said. “This is pure spin and manipulation, as absolutely nothing has changed … There is zero legal purpose for filing this. Zero.” Legal experts also pointed out that the filing could have potentially compromised the family’s safety, as it provided information about her, Pitt’s, and the children’s schedules.

A source told E! News, “Angelina regrets the way she handled certain things and wants to be at peace with Brad … His kids are everything to him and their happiness and success is what’s most important. He would never ever put them through what they went through if he could have prevented it,” the source said. Another insider explained, “He blames Angie for how public everything became … The way everything went down has been beyond comprehension.”

Most insiders see through her PR tactics
Getty Images
Jolie is a master manipulator of the media: Think of paparazzi somehow catching her and her kids smiling in Colorado in January 2017, despite paparazzi never being there otherwise. (She did the same when she and Pitt first got together in Africa, Rolling Stone alleged.) The New York Times explained it in 2008: “Ms. Jolie expertly walks a line between known entity and complete mystery, cultivates relationships with friendly reporters and even sets up her own photo shoots for the paparazzi … Most skillfully, she dictates terms to celebrity magazines involving their coverage of her and her family, editors say, creating an awkward situation for publications that try to abide by strict journalistic standards.” Those terms reportedly included no longer using the name “Brangelina,” “blanket positive coverage” of the starlet, and a large focus on her and then-lover Pitt’s charity work.

Some of those terms were exposed when The Smoking Gun published a contract from Jolie’s lawyers for reporters to sign while doing press for A Mighty Heart (2007) in 2007, leading more than one outlet to reportedly boycott the film’s promotional rounds. The contract dictated that “the interview may only be used to promote the Picture. … The interview will not be used in a manner that is disparaging, demeaning or derogatory to Ms. Jolie.” The contract was later rescinded by her lawyer, but the damage was done.

Page Six reported in February 2017 that after Jolie’s split from Pitt, she was desperate for an image makeover to the point that she actually attempted to hire a publicist for the first time in years after handling press on her own, though at least initially there were no takers. However, public relations expert Raoul Felder explained, “Hiring a PR person now is like going for a checkup at the doctor after you’ve already had the heart attack … The real skill would have been avoiding the PR problem to begin with … Angelina has for years used her kids, and used the UN, for her own benefit. Now, even with great PR, her image issues are not going to go away.”

How she can turn it around
Getty Images
Never underestimate the power of a good publicist. If Jolie links up with a powerful PR rep, she may be able to clean up her public image. She can also focus on her humanitarian efforts, deliver a killer action sequence like she did in her prime, star in an Oscar vehicle, slay with Maleficent 2, and have another amazing red carpet moment — think of her infamous leg flash at the 2012 Academy Awards. She may also want to learn to play a bit nicer with her co-stars and make an effort to develop friendships with female celebrities … and keep away from male ones who are in relationships. Making herself more relatable to both her peers, as well as the public, may also earn her some of the good will that makes rival Aniston so endearing.

Whatever Happened To Angelina Jolie’s Brother?
Tinseltown/Shutterstock
BY JESSICA SAGER AND FRANCES DEAN/UPDATED: OCT. 26, 2021 6:52 PM EDT
James Haven became a media sensation for his lovey-dovey trip to the Oscars ini 2000 with his kid sister, Angelina Jolie — but we haven’t heard much from him since. Of course, the tabloids had a field day spinning yarns about the siblings’ supposed incestuous relationship.

In fact, a good chunk of any gossip item related to James Haven had a direct connection to his far more famous sister, and it’s not hard to understand why. Did James Haven marry a twice-awarded Sexiest Man Alive, adopt a multicultural brood of children, win countless awards, or became a UNICEF ambassador? No, he did not.

But he has been sort of silently along for the ride during his sister’s meteoric rise to the top of the movie biz, thus making him something of a Hollywood mystery. Has Haven been able to lead a colorful life in his own right? If so, what’s he been up to all these years? Let’s start at the beginning.

Remember that kiss?
David Mcnew/Getty Images
James Haven became famous — or should we say infamous? — in 2000 when he accompanied Angelina Jolie to the 2000 Academy Awards. Although Jolie won the Oscar that night for “Girl, Interrupted”, she made bigger headlines for her public displays of affection with her sibling during the ceremony. While accepting her Oscar, Jolie expressed, in no uncertain terms, her undying love for her brother. “I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now,” she said, per Us Weekly. “He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that.”

The strange statement left a lot of people scratching their heads. What exactly did Jolie mean by “in love?” It wasn’t entirely clear. Either way, things got more confusing when the pair locked lips on the red carpet later that night.

As you can probably imagine, it got a lot of people talking. Some claimed it was indicative of an incestuous relationship, while others, like documentarian Ian Halperin, thought it was a well-executed attention grab. “[I]t was mainly a publicity stunt and it worked,” Halperin told Radar Online, but he did admit, “On the flip side people agree the kiss was too close for comfort.” Umm yeah, way too close.

But maybe it wasn’t that weird after all

Both Angelina Jolie and James Haven have downplayed their notorious kiss over the years. When asked about the incident in 2000, Jolie told Entertainment Weekly that it was “just brotherly love.” She also added that her parents found the tender moment between brother and sister to be quite sweet. “My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter,” Jolie assured the outlet.

Haven has also said the moment was blown out of proportion. “I did not give Angie a French kiss; it was something simple and lovely,” Haven told the Daily Mail in 2007. “She was about to go off to Mexico to finish filming ‘Original Sin’ with Antonio Banderas. I congratulated her on the Oscar win and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. It was snapped and became a big thing round the world.”

In 2014, a close friend of Jolie and Haven’s late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, shed more light on that smooch, claiming it was inspired by Bertrand’s health woes. “The day she kissed Jamie at the Oscars, it was the first day Marcheline was treated for cancer. They left the hospital together and got ready together,” Cis Rundle told Radar Online. “Nobody in the world knew that they spent the day in the hospital. It was like, ‘Look where we’re at now.’ But the world saw something incestual.”

Making peace in the family

Although Angelina Jolie and James Haven were very close to their mother, they had a famously difficult relationship with their father, Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight. “I have no memory at all of my mother shouting at me or at my sister,” Haven told the Daily Mail in 2007. “But I do have horrible memories of my father and the way he behaved. He was so tough on our mother.”

“He lived in the same town. We saw him around Christmas time or at school recitals,” Haven said. “He was always around but he never did his job as a father.” Their relationship was so strained that Haven dropped his surname in favor of his middle name, as did Jolie. Around 2009, Haven became a born-again Christian, reconciled with Voight, and encouraged Jolie to also let bygones be bygones, according to E! News. Jolie reportedly followed his lead about a year later.

Since then, Voight has grown close to his grandchildren, and Jolie and he are thick as thieves once again. Case in point, in 2021 Voight told CBS News that Jolie was a “remarkable” actor and that he would “love to work with her” one day.

James Haven used to be close to his sister

James Haven managed to stay very close with Angelina Jolie over the years and has been a fixture at some of her biggest movie premieres, including “Salt,” In the “Land of Blood and Honey,” and “Maleficent.” “I go to Angie for advice and won’t do anything without her because we were so close as children,” he told the Daily Mail in 2007.

Haven also attended Jolie and Brad Pitt’s intimate wedding ceremony in 2014 in France. At the event, the brother-sister duo paid tribute to their late mother — who died of ovarian cancer in 2007 — by wearing pieces of her jewelry. “I also wore a little flower ring that was hers, and Jamie wore an angel pin from her jewelry box,” Jolie told People magazine in 2014.

The pair grew especially close after the death of their mother, with Haven telling the Daily Mail that Jolie had his back all the way during the trying time. “When I first lost my mother, I couldn’t stop crying,” he said. “Fortunately, I was with Angie when we heard. It was such a big moment.”

Did Angelina Jolie’s kids call him daddy?
s_bukley/Shutterstock
So, we already know that James Haven has been, at various points, very close with Angelina Jolie. But what about her kids? Well, Haven was reportedly equally close with Jolie’s brood, seeing as how he served as her nanny for a number of years, even living with Jolie and Brad Pitt.

In the months following Pitt and Jolie’s extra messy split, Haven was spotted all around town with the kiddos. He reportedly spent so much time with the kids that, according to an OK! magazine source, they apparently started calling him “Daddy.” The tipster claimed, “There are days when James spends more time with them than either of their busy parents, but hopefully they’ll intervene if they start calling him ‘mom’ too!”

Of course, we may never know if Brangelina’s kids ever called Haven “Daddy,” but there is plenty of evidence that he spent a significant amount of time with them. After the divorce news broke, the Daily Mail shared photos of him strolling through LAX with the fam after a trip to NYC. And the day before the world found out about the filing? The outlet released some snaps of Haven hanging out at a park with the kids.

Actually, he was more like the head ‘manny’
Dave J Hogan/Getty Images
A source told Grazia magazine (via Stuff.nz) that James Haven stopped watching after Brangelina’s army of children in March 2017. “Things haven’t been easy with Brad and Angelina’s divorce, and James has done more than his fair share helping out while the family goes through a major upheaval,” the tipster claimed. “But he’s done.”

The transition away from his role as “manny” to his many nieces and nephews was reportedly very difficult for Haven. “He’s loved spending so much time with his nieces and nephews, but it’s hard work and he’s absolutely shattered,” the source continued. “It was his job to be there if any of the kids woke up during the night and to deal with the nannies if they had any issues. He was virtually running the household and it became very draining.” The source added that Jolie let Haven go so he could focus on himself. “She was worried about how exhausted he looked and realized he needed a break,” the insider said.

At the time, the insider claimed that Pitt was about to start spending more time with the kids, rendering Haven’s position irrelevant. However, given the nasty custody battle that’s followed the divorce, Pitt has reportedly struggled to be around the kids as much as he’d like. Maybe Angie wishes she’d kept Haven around after all.

In 2016, it seemed like James Haven had a promising career in show business ahead of him. After leaving Angelina Jolie’s household where he worked as a nanny for her six kids, he started pursuing gigs that put him behind the camera.

The Wrap reported that Haven signed on to direct “The Last Boy,” a science fiction/fantasy drama about a young boy who searches for survivors after an airborne virus has destroyed humanity. Haven’s previous off and on screen stints include the short film “Court of Conscience,” starring his father and the late Anton Yelchin, and an appearance in an episode of the television series “The Game.” Ultimately, “The Last Boy” was set to become Haven’s feature directorial debut.

Over the years, Haven has appeared in bit parts in various movies, including the 2001 thriller “Original Sin,” starring Jolie, and the Oscar-winning drama “Monster’s Ball,” starring Jolie’s ex-husband, Billy Bob Thornton. The writer of the latter film, Milo Addica, was also set to write the script for “The Last Boy’,” but it looks like that version of the project did not come to fruition. In 2019, a movie with that title was released, but neither Addica nor Haven were involved.

Rumors about an incestious relationship between Angelina Jolie and her brother, James Haven, existed for years, thanks in part to that super awkward red carpet kiss. It’s worth nothing, yet again, that other than that weird moment of PDA the rumors are almost certainly merciless.

Case-in-point: Haven has been linked to someone else for a long time. In 2011, the Daily Mail reported that Haven had been in his first serious relationship with a theater studies graduate named Ashley Reign. The pair has always done their best to stay out of the spotlight. “The reason we have such a good relationship is precisely because I don’t talk to the media about James,” Reign told the Daily Mail at the time. While the notoriously private pair hasn’t shared exactly when they got together, we do know that there has been something going on since at least 2010, because that’s when Haven brought Reign to the premiere of “Salt.” A Daily Mail source alleged Brad Pitt was “very relieved” Haven found a significant other, claiming that the relationship was “a distraction to stop him from taking such a strong interest in what Angelina was doing.”

According to the Daily Mail, Reign works as a karate instructor.

Branjameslina was awkward for everyone

We’ve already discussed at length just how awkward that infamous red carpet kiss between Angelina Jolie and her brother James Haven was for all those unlucky enough to witness it. We’ve also outlined how Haven moved in with Brad Pitt and Jolie to serve as a full time “manny” for their many kids. And at first, it seemed to be a good fit. As a source told Us Weekly in 2016, “Brad thinks highly of James. He’s always been incredible to the kids and is welcome in his home.”

Well, there’s an old adage about how complicated things can get when you do business with family, and apparently, it might’ve proved to be true when Jolie and Pitt enlisted the help of Haven.

In 2017, just after Jolie and Pitt filed for divorce, documentarian Ian Halperin shared his take on the family’s dynamic to Radar Online. “James was so close to them that he was actually living with them,” Halperin claimed. “It put Brad over the edge. Brad gave Ang the ultimatum: it’s him or me.” According to Halperin, “It really made Brad uncomfortable how close James was. He wanted to be ‘hands on Brad dad’ and he didn’t need another nanny because they already have so many nannies.”

Did the siblings grow apart?
Featureflash Photo Agency/Shutterstock
The last time James Haven made major headlines was when she shared the infamous kiss with Angelina Jolie in 2000. If you’re keeping track, that’s over 20 years ago. But in January 2021, he popped up again and, once again, questions began to swirl about his dynamic with his famous sister. Time may pass, but some things never change.

As the Daily Mail reported, Haven was spotted for the first time in years outside of an apartment building in Los Angeles. While he was once rumored to be Jolie’s full-time nanny, he was reportedly fired sometime after she filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, and the relationship has yet to recover. “They used to be inseparable; he was very much her go-to companion and was her best friend for so many years as well as a devoted brother,” a source told the outlet.

Despite the close bond, the pair evidently grew apart with shocking speed. “But all of a sudden and with no real explanation their communication seemed to just stop out of nowhere,” the source continued. “He does his thing, she does hers, and while they may be cordial from a distance, you certainly don’t see or hear of them being together. An air of mystery may still surround the relationship between Haven and Jolie, but here’s hoping, as her divorce and custody battle wraps up, and her kids grow older, they’ll find a way to work things out.

James Haven leads a modest life
s_bukley/Shutterstock
James Haven’s father, John Voight, is an Oscar winner. His sister, Angelina Jolie, also has an Academy Award and happens to be about as A-list as it gets. Yet Haven reportedly leads a pretty down-to-earth life. According to the Daily Mail, Haven reportedly spent most of the COVID-19 pandemic with his girlfriend, Ashley Reign, in an apartment in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Canoga Park, the area where the apartment is reportedly located, is about 25 miles away from Jolie’s Los Feliz home. Given his Tinseltown roots, one might assume he would put his feet up in shockingly expensive digs, but the suburb is less pricey than the neighborhood where his sister resides. According to Point2Homes, the house value average in Canoga Park is over $500,000; in Los Feliz, that number is well over $1 million.

Shortly after the Daily Mail ran the story about Haven staying with his longterm girlfriend, the outlet reported he was seen out and about at a Malibu beach with a “mystery blonde.” Their source said the two “spent around an hour and a half together on a blanket near the ocean at a popular spot for surfers” and he appeared “to be having a lot of fun.” A casual beach hangout may not be as glamorous as, say, a Marvel movie premiere, but is definitely not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
