We should return to ancient traditions and only eat meat on feast days to help tackle obesity, a government food adviser has claimed.

Our meat consumption is ‘out of control’, according to Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University, London.

He suggested we should re-adopt the tradition of regarding meat as a treat and only eating it on feast days, such as Christmas.

Dramatically reducing our intake of meat would also help prevent climate change, he said.

‘Let’s go back to where culture has been for thousands of years, which is meat is an exception,’ Prof Lang told The Telegraph.

‘If you were growing meat yourself, it is an incredibly slow process and killing and eating an animal is a special day.

‘At Christmas if we were well off we had beef. It was a big deal. We killed an animal as an exception, for a feast.’

He said he was not suggesting we only have meat once or twice a year, but no more than once a week.

In medieval times, there were a large number of feast days to celebrate saints or recognise the changing of the seasons.

Prof Lang, who advises the World Health Organisation, as well as the Department for Environment, on food policy, said eating too much meat can lead to serious health issues such as obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Last year, Sir Liam Donaldson, then Chief Medical Officer for England, said reducing meat consumption by 30 per cent would prevent 18,000 premature deaths a year.

The process of producing meat is harmful for the environment because of the energy and water used to grow animals, and cows produce the greenhouse gas methane.

Sir Paul McCartney has advocated Meat-Free Mondays, but Prof Lang said: ‘I am saying instead of having one day where you do not eat meat, eat meat once a week and have really good, grass-fed meat.’

I don’t think this researcher is ‘telling us what to do’ – he’s simply giving his assessment of the matter.
At the moment, we in the West can eat meat every day, and food is so plentiful that we can hardly imagine being denied anything we want. But the time may come when population growth means that we have to cut down on farmland because we’ll be short of space. As developing countries grow richer, they’ll start demanding meat every day too, but where will those animals live, and where will we find the space to grow extra grain to feed them?

Wrong Prof. Lang. It’s sugar and too many starchy carbs, especially processed grains, that make people obese. Protein is the diet food, and it doesn’t have to be red meat.
Wrong. In medieval times, only the elite ate meat. Everyone else lived on beans, leeks and wild greens.

If this ‘expert’ knew anything at all, he would know that our teeth show that we evolved as omnivorous/carnivorous – rabbits, horses and cows are herbivores, and have grinding teeth; we, like dogs and wolves, have tearing teeth as well as grinding/mashing teeth. Yet another one hanging onto the ZanuLabour policy of telling everyone what to do and what to think … Presumably his salary is dependent on ‘research’ and providing suggestions for ‘The Stupid Ideas Department’.

Where do all these completely out of touch with normal reality come from? Have they no idea how expensive meat is for a normal family? If they did, they would know meat is only eaten as a treat by most of them and is saved for when it comes to so called ‘feast days’.

How stupid of this expert. Definition of an expert: Ex as in has been and spurt as a drip under pressure. Humans have being eating meat for ever and in the main they were not fat; it is only since the introduction of processed food and excessive use of sugars that has caused this rise in obesity. How much was this fool paid. Trouble with fools like this, is that the dimwits in Government will believe this as they have not got a brain cell between them for logical thought (except for fiddling expenses).

Nonsense. Protein is the ultimate diet food because it cuts appetite and a third of the calories in protein are consumed in its digestions. It would be impossible for normal people to eat enough high protein foods such as fish, soya, chicken, etc] to get fat. Add lots of above ground veg but limited fruit and no fruit juice [being high in sugar] and one will have all the nutrients and fibre necessary and will not be able to avoid losing weight. The advice should be to cut down as far as possible simple carbohydrates [such as potatoes, bananas, white, bread, pasta, rice, alcohol, etc] and only have complex/wholemeal carbs. It is no accident that those who live on take aways of pizza, rice and sweet deserts plus lots of alcohol are the fattest.
