Windy weather in Western Australia has helped fire crews to contain a blaze that has been burning out of control for several days.

The fire in the state’s Gascoyne region started on Christmas Eve near Marrilla Station before burning towards Yanrey Station and Koordarrie Station.

It has destroyed more than 150,000 hectares of bush and threatened several remote stations but is now mostly contained.

Arvid Hogstrom from the Department of Environment and Conservations says cooling temperatures and changing wind conditions have been a big help.

“We actually thought it was going to be a hindrance with the change to the north-westerly winds blowing the fire into more open ground and expanding the fire size,” he said.

“But the constantly changing winds mean the fire has burnt back on itself a little bit and reduced its rate of spread significantly.”
