HE’S played iconic roles in international blockbusters The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings, but Hugo Weaving’s performance in the Sydney Film Festival’s opening night movie Mystery Road has been touted as something special.
So says festival director Nashen Moodley, who described Weaving as “truly one of Australia’s great actors” and feels “very privileged” he’s part of next month’s program.
Weaving will not only attend the Mystery Road’s June 5 world premiere with director Ivan Sen (Toomelah), but is also the jury president of this year’s official competition.
“I’m a big fan of his (Weaving’s) work,” Moodley told AAP on Wednesday at the program launch for the 60th Sydney Film Festival (SFF).
“But I must say that I think his performance in Mystery Road is pretty special.
“It’s not something I could’ve expected.”
Australian films make up just over 30 of the 190 films selected for this year’s program, but of the 12 vying against each other for $60,000 in the official competition, one Australian entry was selected – The Rocket, by Kim Mordaunt.
“(It) has done so well at the Berlin and Tribeca Film Festivals, so we look forward to welcoming that film home,” Moodley said.
Aussie actors also feature across a variety of flicks, including Toni Collette in The Way, Way Back and Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska in Park Chan-wook’s Stoker.
Both Collette, Wasikowska and Park are some of the festival’s guests this year.
Other films to watch out for include Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University, voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, and official competition selection Only God Forgives, one of nine films hot off the back of Cannes Film Festival making their way to SFF.
