If you have ever wanted to learn Hebrew slang, now’s your chance to with a superstar teacher.
Israeli-born Holywood star Gal Gadot has posted a nearly six-minute video that will fill you in on what Israelis are talking about when they say such things as “What am I, a goat?” “cow, cow” and “cabbage head.”
Non-agricultural expressions include an explanation of why a “waste of time” is good, when to say “third-time, ice-cream” and what exactly people mean when the exclaim “crap in juice.”
She also tackles the commonly heard “yalla/come on, hurry up,” achi/brother” and “no evil eye,” which she companies with a series of superstitious hand gestures and spitting several times.
Gadot’s video was posted to YouTube this week, part of a collaboration with Vanity Fair magazine, after the “Wonder Woman” star appeared on their November cover.
Gadot also sparked headlines this week when she announced that she would team up again with “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins in a new film about the legendary Egyptian Queen Cleopatra.
The announcement drew criticism, with some railing against the casting of an Israeli as the Queen of Egypt, saying that an Arab or Black woman should have won the role.
Others objected simply because she is Israeli. However, many, including the screenplay author, were quick to point out that Cleopatra was neither Arab nor Black, but rather a Macedonian Greek.
Gadot this month came third on the Forbes list of the highest-paid actresses in the world in 2020.
