What Does Your Skin Look Like Under UV Light?
Our skin is our primary line of defense against the UV rays from the sun. Though we do need exposure to the sun for synthesis of vitamin D, too much can cause premature aging of the skin and can even lead to skin cancer, which is the most common cancer in the United States. While damage to the skin in the form of moles or melanoma is quite obvious, there can be changes that are only seen when looking through a UV lens.
In order to help people see what they look like to the sun, artist Thomas Leveritt visited a public park in New York armed with a UV camera capable of showing the hidden damage to skin in a person’s face. The video also revealed the protective power of sunscreen, which triggered some surprising reactions.
