When Chechens Come to Town

K. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov

If you’re unfortunate enough to be a liberal or dysfunctional fellow traveller then Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov (pictured) is not the sort of dude you want to find at your bedside when you wake up ~ if you wake up. A close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ramzan is the son of the former Chechen President. His dad was assassinated by U.S backed anti-government terrorists.

Allegedly responsible for a swathe of sins that include brutal killings, the colourful character denies any misdeeds.

I don’t want to kill, who did I fight? I fought terrorists. Who did I protect? I protected the whole of Russia so that people in Moscow or St. Petersburg could live in peace. They accuse me of killing women and children. It’s not true.

Whatever the truth there is no doubt that Kadyrov and associates are no limp-wristed wimps. Don’t be fooled by the engaging Chechen President being this week awarded academic status at Moscow’s prestigious Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS). The award was based on Kadyrov’s relentless campaign to bring peace to Chechnya.

Is the award an unusual gesture given the recipient’s interesting past?

I emphasise that for me the best doctoral thesis is a restored and re-built Chechnya. The highest honour is the trust and recognition of the people.

This much loved and respected head of state dealt ruthlessly with Western-backed so-called rebels. That attempt at regime change was an epic Washington DC fail. It would appear that Washington’s similar strategy to oust Syrian President Assad is another conflict that has gone belly up for U.S foreign policy.

Russian President Putin, an ally in the Chechen conflict, is equally ruthless in taking off the kid gloves when dealing with internal terrorism. The Russian President once remarked,

To forgive the terrorists is up to God, to send them to him is up to me.

K Vladimir Putin and the Russian rider Alexander Zaldostanov

Putin, a well-known biker, and Ramzan Kadyrov, are often in the company of the Night Wolves biker club leader Alexander Zaldostanov. One can imagine that if Zaldostanov, better known as ‘the surgeon’ was to descend on effete Berlin with his bikers, the ‘refugee’ problem would be resolved in hours.

To Western eyes the Ramzan Kadyrov delegation’s chosen transport to Moscow might at first suggest an impoverished nomadic backdrop. Dream on; those stallions each cost more than most limos and their upkeep is far costlier. The cheapest such stallion can set you back $100,000. The equine troupe, even in Moscow with a population said to be twice that of New York City, would have made car owners look like cheapskates.
