According to anonymous “former and current US officials” Iranian hackers infiltrated the Bowman Avenue Dam in New York City back in 2013.

The breach happened at a “small structure about 20 miles from New York City is used for flood control” because the hackers used “a cellular modem”.

An unclassified document from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was quoted as proof of this breach; however this information was not contained in the document.

Although direct evidence of Iranian hackers has remained elusive, media reports claim “an investigation pointed to Iran as the likely source of the attack and alerted US authorities to the significant cyber warfare capabilities of that nation.”

Marcus Serrano, manager of Rye City told the press that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) requested information on the “hacking incident” 2 years ago.

Media reports tied this hack to incidents when hackers allegedly from Iran were hacking into banks prior to the use of Stuxnet, a computer virus that was utilized to cripple an Iranian “nuclear facility”.

Apparently, DHS analysists “ discovered the hack while monitoring IP addresses associated with disruptions to websites of US banking institutions. They found computers trawling the internet for vulnerable industrial infrastructure, and a couple of IP addresses were linked to a ‘Bowman’ dam. The trouble? There are 31 dams with the name Bowman in the United States, and they didn’t know which one it was.”
