Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : U.S. citizens’ lack of education in geography is, despite the global presence of U.S. troops and bases, legendary. However, not many of us would expect that White House officials, in a document, would label President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China as President of Taiwan, or would we? And why is the Post making up a Hogwash story about it?
nsnbc international had the pleasure to receive a copy of a document issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary, issued on July 8, 2017. The document has the headline:
REMARKS BY PRESIDENT TRUMP BEFORE BILATERAL MEETING WITH PRESIDENT XI OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA
The document was issued shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump and the leader of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, not to be confused with the Republic of China (Taiwan / ROC) held a meeting at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany on Saturday, the White House issued a transcript of Trump’s statement, in which Xi was mislabeled as the president of the ROC.
Pundits from various media like the Washington Post would speculate that this was no mistake and that the glitch signaled that Trump and his administration don’t accept Beijing’s one-China policy.
“On the surface, this may seem to be just a minor oversight, but considering Trumps’ previous wavering on the one-China policy long held by Washington, this could be taken as an offense by Beijing,” speculated reporters from the Washington Post.
But then again, the Washington Post would also uncritically regurgitate alleged “research” by PropOrNot, according to which nsnbc international isn’t an independent newspaper but a “propaganda outlet that reliably mirrors Russian propaganda”.
It has truly deserved the title the HogWashPost but then again, nsnbc would never have had the budget to advertise as much as the Washington Post, inadvertently advertised for nsnbc international. We don’t have that kind of money and would probably be able to do a better job with it than the post does if we had it.
But all Hogwash set aside, U.S. citizens are known for their lack of basic education in geography and often don’t even know on what continent a country where the U.S. is engaged in armed conflict is located. An honest mistake based on lack of education, would probably be more likely than any “conspiracy theories” touted in the HogWashPost.
