Why NRA Ignores Philando Castile’s 2nd Amendment Rights

Attorney Tom Kelly, representing St Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez in connection with the shooting death of Philando Castile, told the press that “race did not play a part in the use of deadly force at all.”

Kelly said his client “was reacting to the actions of [Castile]” and that the killing was not racially motivated. The blame was placed on “the presence of a gun”.

The interesting caveat to this claim is that Castile was legally permitted to “carry a gun when he was shot”. In fact, the video confirms that not only did Castile tell Yanez that he was a lawful gun owner, but that he was exorcising his second amendment right to bear arms during the stop.

It was at this point that Yanez decided to shoot Castile in the chest with four rounds at point blank range. Castile was still in the driver’s seat and not an immediate threat to the officer.

Diamond Reynolds, Castile’s fiancé, can be heard in the video saying: “He’s licensed to carry, he was trying to get his ID, his wallet out of his pocket and he let the officer knew he had a firearm and was reaching for his wallet.”

The case of Castile is not only an example of police bias and racially-charged violence against African Americans, but it is also a case that the National Rifle Association (NRA) typically rallies behind because the attorney for the officer is blaming the “presence of a gun” as the reason for the killing.

And doesn’t that fit right into the agenda of the NRA? The answer to that question, sadly, is no.

Susanne.Posel-Headline.News.Official- nra.facebook.page.castile.gun.owner_occupycorporatismAfter days of silence post-Castile’s murder, the NRA finally commented on their Facebook page , saying that they would wait until all the facts were in before commenting. They also claimed to be “the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights organization”, completely forgetting that their gun safety training origins, and added: “The NRA proudly supports the right of law-abiding Americans to carry firearms for defense of themselves and others regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation.”

This stance received adoring praise in the comment section even though traditionally, the NRA has made their opinions known in other instances of gun owner’s rights being infringed, long before all the facts were in; and in some cases before the individual rights theory was even a factor.

For example, just 40 hours and 59 minutes after the first reports of the shooting in Orlando, the NRA tweeted an article about destroying “radical Islam” told their Twitter followers “gun laws don’t deter terrorists” long before all the facts were in.

In 2012, after an angry employee gunned-down five co-workers before killing himself, the NRA tweeted a promotional piece reminding their followers to “cling to your gun rights… this November”.

But for the most part, the NRA uses the aftermath of a mass shooting or other gun-related violence as an opportunity to sell their propaganda and more weapons to gun owners.

  • 2010, NRA advertises the magazine 5 minutes after UC student guns down seven people on a college campus
  • 2012, NRA boasts about Sturm Ruger profit boom 22 hours and 52 minutes after a spa workers shoots estranged wife and 2 more before killing himself
  • 2012, one minute after the Sandy Hook shooting hit the media, the NRA advertised “10 Days of NRA Giveaways”, offering “a chance to win an auto emergency tool”
  • 2013, thirty-seven minutes after a man murdered his father, brother, set his home on fire to cover-up the evidence, then went on to shoot and kill 3 more at Santa Monica College, the NRA tweeted a video “celebration of American values”
  • 2014, NRA advertises for NRAILA Leadership Forum 18 hours and 19 minutes after 3 died at Fort Hood.

The bigger picture of Castile’s death and its gun owner’s rights implications, are being passed over by the NRA, which seems out of purpose for the organization who has built a reputation as the last line of defense between government tyranny and the second amendment.

And yet, Wayne LaPierre is not ranting about the fact that Castile was a resident of Minnesota and that state allows concealed carry thanks to the efforts of the NRA’s lobbyists in collaboration with Republican state lawmakers.

No word from the NRA on Castile’s right to carry a concealed weapon or the fact that the attorney for the murdering officer said it was the “presence of a gun” which provoked the cop to kill Castile.

Why would an African American gun owner be treated differently when the NRA bills itself as the “oldest… civil rights organization” in this country?
