An experiment to unleash genetically modified mosquitoes into residential areas of the Florida Keys is close to approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
Michael Doyle, executive director of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) explained these GM mosquitoes are “essentially [used] as a drug to cure disease.”
Oxitec, a pharmacological corporation funded by Bill Gates to research and develop genetically modified mosquitoes, is involved in this experiment.
This corporation owns a patented method of genetically modifying and breeding “Aedes aegypti with fragments of proteins from the herpes simplex virus and E. coli bacteria as well as genes from coral and cabbage.”
In Marathon, Florida, Oxitec has built a “breeding lab” filled with “modified female” mosquitoes who are expected to mate with males and produce infertile offspring; thereby reducing the population.
The breeding lab is in Key Haven and dangerously close to 444 homes that reside at the north end of Key West.
In 2010, with a $19.7 million grant to Oxitec, Anthony James of the University of California (UC) headed experimentation on animals in Mexico to illustrate the necessity of knowledge on how mosquitoes could be used in future release programs.
Curiously, James explained that because their money was gifted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) that “they can push their own agenda.”
Hidden in the Cayman Islands, James and his team worked with Oxitec at the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) and followed guidelines provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO stated that this experiment must conclude in 3 months from inception.
In reality, the Cayman Islands became a beta-testing ground for GM mosquitoes released onto the environment and inhabitants without permission or foreknowledge; so long as the corporations involved followed rules laid out by the United Nations.
James claims that these GM mosquitoes were bred sterile; making the prospect of the engineered insects propagating with natural insects a moot point.
However, Gurmit Singh, chair of the Center for Environment, Technology and Development (CETD) commented that “if these mosquitoes are completely safe, then why the hush-hush?”
The concern is that “it’s highly improbable that there will be negative consequences of this foreign DNA entering someone that’s bitten by an Oxitec mosquito.”
And a call for transparency in the make-up of Oxitec’s “synthetic DNA” regarding evidence showing that it “causes no harm when transferred into humans by its mosquitoes” should be apparent; however when “the company that stands to gain or the regulatory agency involved” an agenda is clear.
Oxitec is selling their GM mosquitoes to the FDA with marketing points such as:
- The GM mosquitoes are predisposed to “kill their progeny not make them stronger”
- The experiment will be contained at Oxitec facilities
- “Killing off Aedes aegypti can protect human health while eliminating an invasive species”
- Using GM mosquitoes would save money
Oxitec claims that even “if the FDA decides against the test, or the modified mosquitoes fail to work as promised, [we] will still need to kill the bugs.”
