  • Couple ate the freshly-made meal from a recipe they had used dozens of times before
  • They both became ill within hours but her symptoms worsened

A grandmother who cooked the same fish pie recipe for years died after the dish gave her food poisoning.

Alwyn Kelly, 66, ate the meal with her husband Frank but soon after both had upset stomachs.

While Mr Kelly recovered quickly, his wife briefly rallied but then began to hallucinate and was admitted to hospital. Three weeks later, she died of multiple organ failure, with doctors unable to treat the infection.

At an inquest this week, a coroner found that Mrs Kelly was killed by her  favourite fish dish.

Her husband told the hearing that on the night of July 8 last year she made her usual pie with fresh ingredients.

Mr Kelly said the meal tasted normal but that evening both  suffered upset stomachs, with his wife vomiting through the night.

‘She stayed at home most of the following day drinking water, and the vomiting and diarrhoea stopped,’ he said.

‘She ate lunch and an evening meal the following day and had no more problems, but we then had to go out and she drove.

‘While parking the car she hit a dry stone wall and was shaken up.

‘She later told me she had been having visual problems or hallucinations when she was driving.’

The next day Mrs Kelly, a mother or two and grandmother of three, became so weak she was unable to rise from her chair.

Mr Kelly told the hearing he called NHS Direct when his wife became ill and was told to take her to hospital. At Gloucestershire Royal Hospital she was given numerous tests.

The doctors thought she had food poisoning but nothing specific could be identified.

Acute care consultant Dr Stephen Twigg said she was suffering from an infection and sepsis from an undetected source. ‘Several hours after admission, she had to be put on a ventilator to help her breathing,’ he said. ‘Tests ruled out botulism [a type of food poisoning].’

Mr and Mrs Kelly had recently been on holiday to Italy – but the inquest heard Mrs Kelly had not suffered illness abroad or when they first returned home.

Consultant pathologist Dr Keith McCarthy said he found narrowing of the arteries and an acute infection in the abdominal cavity.

He said Mrs Kelly died from multiple organ failure caused, more likely than not, by a virus which could be impossible to detect or by a low level neuro toxin.

He said either of these had most likely come from food poisoning.

Emergency consultant Dr Mark Allen told the inquest at Gloucester Coroner’s Court that Mrs Kelly’s blood had shown marked abnormalities.

She was suffering from kidney impairment and a breakdown of her muscles.

‘By July 29 she was extremely weak. Her kidneys were struggling and her bowel had stopped absorbing food,’ critical care consultant Dr Tom Perris said.

‘Not one part of her body  was functioning well and we discussed with her family that  we should not subject her to further intervention.’

Her husband said: ‘The care she received in the hospital was superb.’

Mrs Kelly died on August 3, leaving children Sharon and James and grandchildren Monty, Scarlett and Angus.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner David Dooley said the fish pie was the most likely cause of Mrs Kelly’s death.

‘I believe it is more likely than not the poisoning came from the meal.

‘Either the toxin was ingested or a bug was ingested that then produced the toxin.’

So sad x

Sounds like the most UNconclusive thing possible. Rather disturbing, poor lady – RIP

Poor woman to suffer like that, and poor Husband who must have felt so helpless, I’m so sorry for their loss.

RIP

The symptoms match ciguatera poisoning. I am very wary about where I buy fish from these days. You can’t always believe the sellers claims of their source.

Poor lady what a terrible thing to happen my thoughts are with her husband at this sad time

Sepsis causes multiple organ failure. I know, I’ve had it. Sounds to me like the food poisoning might have just been an unfortunate coincidence and that the real problem might have been the blood infection. Infection can enter through the smallest cut,and take over quickly, especially if your defences are low; if you don’t catch it quick enough there’s very little you can do. Over 50% of patients die, although it’s not usually listed as the cause of death. My sympathy to the husband.

Sounds like ciguatera poisoning to me… Usually only caused by the residual poison in reef fish consumed by predators then by humans.. Poor lady RIP

Doubtful as that means the fish would have to have been tropical as the article states “fresh” that’s unlikely.

Poor lady and her family must be distraught. It’s good to see someone stating that their care was superb and not trying to sue the hospital for once.
