Woman Dies from Exorcism

Woman dies when family members try to beat the devil out of her.

A 41-year-old woman died during an exorcism performed by five members of her family. Those relatives wanted to expel a “demon” whom they believed had possessed the woman. The family is from South Korea.

According to officials, the victim’s relatives reported that before they decided to conduct the exorcism, the victim was flailing around and physically aggressive, lashing out at others, and talking to herself for “unexplained reasons”. Allegedly, the family group pushed the victim to the floor and pinned her there while two youths sat on her legs. A young man held down her shoulders. A cousin of the victim stuffed a towel and then fabric-covered hangers in the victim’s mouth to stop her from screaming. Family members then beat the victim severely, causing massive force on her chest and stomach areas.

The ordeal continued for at least two hours. Due to the massive chest compression and violence to the neck area, the woman died of suffocation.

When it became apparent to the family members that the victim had died, they contacted a religious leader. When that religious leader realized what had happened, hotel personnel were contacted, and the police were called. The family’s religious beliefs are not known, but police say that a pastor from the Korean Evangelical Church alerted them to the incident.

All five family members were arrested and charged with murder. One of the defendants is the victim’s 16-year-old son. The other defendants are her son’s 15-year-old cousin, the victim’s 44-year-old cousin, and this cousin’s 22-year-old son and 19-year-old daughter.

Prosecutors said the suspects have undergone psychiatric evaluation, but no evidence of mental illness was found. Such a finding would have provided a basis for reduced or repealed criminal responsibility.

The incident occurred in the Hotel Intercontinental in Frankfort, Germany, during December 2015.
