Woman rescued from Last Hope Track after two days stranded in the bush

UPDATE 3.42pm: A 56-YEAR-OLD battler who survived two days stranded in the bush in scorching heat in Victoria’s northwest has left hospital so she can fix her car.

The woman trekked more than 25km through desert terrain after her Ford Transit van broke down in Murray Sunset National Park, 550km from Melbourne near the South Australian border, on Monday.

The woman, originally from South Australia and on a solo trip around Australia, was admitted to Mildura Hospital this morning before being discharged late today.

Mildura Acting Sergeant Jason Bruhn said the woman was driving through the national park on Monday when her van broke down 5km south of Rocket Lake about 10am.

The woman spent eight hours trying to repair the van before setting off on foot to find help, he said.

“She took four litres of water, and umbrella for shade, all the food she could carry and a sleeping bag in two backpacks and she was on her way,” he said.

“She’s a fairly handy woman, incredibly self sufficient.”

With temperatures soaring past 40C, the woman, who had no phone signal, walked through the night to escape the heat and slept in the afternoons.

Acting Sgt Bruhn said she walked about 25km before getting a signal on Last Hope Track.

Local police located her about 12.30am, he said.

“She was just about out of water so it was a good thing we could get to her,” he said.

She was taken to Mildura suffering severe blistering to her feet.

But Acting Sgt Bruhn said the woman wanted to discharge herself shortly after arriving in hospital so she could go and get her van.

“She sold her home recently and her van has all her possessions, she lives out of it and she is worried about it.”
