Woman set alight in Sydney was targeted

A woman who was grabbed from behind and set alight with an accelerant as she walked along an inner Sydney street was targeted by her attacker, police say.

The 33-year-old was walking along Chippen Street in Chippendale at around 9.45pm (AEDT) on Thursday, when a man set her on fire.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, suffered significant burns to her upper body, including her face.

“She had significant burns to her upper area,” Acting Superintendent Leanne McCusker told reporters in Sydney.

“It was a significant injury – it’s been quite distressing how that female is.”

Following the attack, the woman was rushed into the Golden Flower brothel nearby, where an employee extinguished the flames.

Police would not confirm if the woman worked at the brothel. Some news media are reporting the woman worked as a prostitute.

They say early investigations have caused them to believe the attacker targeted the woman, but they have not been able to interview her.

“What we do believe is that it’s not a random attack,” Superintendent McCusker said.

She was taken to Royal Price Alfred Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition, a spokesperson said.
