ZFA welcomes peace with the United Arab Emirates and the State of Israel

The Zionist Federation of Australia welcomes the historic announcement of the normalisation of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and congratulates the leaders of both countries for their vision and commitment to peace in the region.

The landmark peace treaties with Egypt in 1979 and with Jordan in 1994 changed the nature of the region’s political and security situation. This peace agreement with the UAE will result in a relationship with significant advantages in terms of commerce, tourism, national security and diplomacy. Importantly, it strengthens Israel’s vision to live in secure peace with its neighbours and demonstrates that the pursuit of peace in the region is realistic and achievable in our time.

ZFA President Jeremy Leibler said “This is a bold sweeping brushstroke in the mural of our history, and it points to a future with more hope and peace. We hope that this important declaration will be followed by similar treaties between Israel and other nations in the region”.

Mr Leibler and ZFA CEO Ginette Searle have written to His Excellency Ambassador Abdulla Alsubousi, the Ambassador of the UAE in Australia, on behalf of the Australian Jewish community commending and congratulating his nation and offering to work together to strengthen ties with the Australian Jewish community.

This treaty is cause for celebration in the region and in Jewish communities worldwide, including Australia.

The ZFA looks forward to the signing of the peace treaty, and the establishment of warm cultural, diplomatic and trade ties. Israel and the UAE have much to offer each other.
