5 Afghan troops killed in Taliban raid

At least five Afghan army soldiers have been killed in an attack by Taliban militants in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar Province bordering Pakistan.

Local officials said a group of Taliban militants, reportedly disguised in Afghan army uniform, attacked a security check post in the province late Wednesday.

Provincial governor Shuja-ul-Mulk Jalal said the attack on the post prompted clashes with the Afghan army forces, which also left at least six militants dead.

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi also confirmed that seven Afghan army soldiers were killed following the militants’ attack and a roadside bomb explosion in the past 24 hours but did not provide further information about the exact locations where the Afghan soldiers were killed.

The volatile border area is dominated by militants who often use improvised explosive devices to carry out attacks. Earlier in February, heavily-armed Taliban militants attacked an army outpost in the Ghaziabad district of the province, killing at least 20 Afghan army soldiers and kidnapping seven others.

Meanwhile, a Taliban attack on a government compound in southeastern Ghazni Province on Thursday left at least 18 people, including civilians and security forces, dead and over 150 others injured.

Casualties among Afghan soldiers and police have increased in recent months as Taliban stepped up its attacks against the Afghan government, foreign forces and civilians. The group has vowed to escalate the attacks before the US and NATO troops leave the war-torn country by the end of the year.
