But many of the things we know to be bad for us are marketed as perfectly safe. When you take your health and safety into your own hands, you have to dedicate some serious time to researching the relevant topics and taking meaningful steps towards better health by avoiding health hazards.

Here are just a few tips to get you started—ways you can easily avoid common health hazards. In addition, be sure to check out the simple ways you can naturally purify your home.

6 Avoidable Health Hazards

  1. Stop microwaving in plastic – Microwaves are one of the lesser known health hazards. Microwave dangers include depleting food of nutritional value and ultimately the lead you to  be sick. While getting rid of your microwave altogether might be too big of a leap for you, at the minimum, you should stop using plastic containers to reheat foods. Plastics contain all sorts of chemicals and unnatural substances (when’s the last time you saw a plastic tree in the wild?). These chemicals can be altered when put in the microwave, leeching into your foods. While some sources say you can trust those that claim to be microwave-safe, others say there is no such thing as a microwave-safe plastic. Your best bet: use glass.
  2. Trade out that plastic shower curtain. Vinyl shower curtains and curtain liners are made of PVC, which contains copious amounts of phthalates. These phthalates are known hormone-disrupters. They’ve been shown to cause both reproductive and neurological damage by mimicking hormones. Other sources of phthalates include pill coatings, clays, wax, paint, glues, lubricants, and more. Replace your thin plastic curtain with fabric or glass doors and look for other inexpensive ways to get rid of these dangerous substances in your home.
  3. Get your phone off of your face. Among some of the better known health hazards, cellphones are now listed as carcinogenic by The World Health Organization. They are categorized on the same level as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform. With how dependent we are on our cell phones these days, adjusting your phone use can be tricky. Whenever possible use your speaker phone or at least don’t press the phone against your head while using it. Sending text messages or using land lines are other options.
  4. Clean your humidifier. Many parents use humidifiers nonstop in homes with infants. The commonly held belief is that it quiets coughs and keeps everyone healthy. But unless you are diligent about cleaning your humidifier, the opposite is likely true. Without regular cleaning, humidifiers can become filled with fungus and bacteria, all of which is sprayed around the home in an easily-inhaled mist. If you can’t do without the steam, clean and disinfect your humidifier regularly.
  5. Clean your colon naturally. Colon cleansing and hydrotherapy is all the rage in some circles. People pay hundreds to have their colon cleaned out with water or a combination of herbs and various substances. But the body is a naturally-self-cleaning machine and these cleanses can actually do more harm than good. Instead, eat a diet rich with fiber and detoxifying foods. Supplement with foods that contain good bacteria or take active cultures to ensure your self-cleaning machine is operating optimally.
  6. Eliminate pesticides in your home. Bug sprays might be great for killing the occasional unwanted pest, but they are also potentially damaging to you, your family and pets. As Mercola reports, even flea and tick collars contain dangerous pesticides. Practice natural pest control and get rid of the chemicals.

Staying healthy naturally can seem overwhelming in this age of chemicals and man-made health hazards and health risks. But taking just a few simple steps can dramatically reduce common health risks and have you well on your way to a healthier and happier family.
