Ankara governor Mehmet Kiliçer, told the press that the explosion was aimed at a convoy of military vehicles that passed through the city’s administrative center near the parliament, other government buildings and Turkey’s military headquarters. Deputy Prime Minister Nauman Kurtulmus announced that the attack was carried out with a car bomb. The statement is consistent with amateur video footage that was released on social media sites.

Kurtelmus noted that the perpetrators had not yet been identified and stressed that this attack did not only target military personnel in the shuttle but the entire nation. Kurtelmus expressed his strong condemnation of the bombing, the perpetrators and those who had provided logistical and other support for them. A military spokesman confirmed that a bus transporting military personnel had been targeted.

Turkey’s President R. Tayyip Erdogan stated that the attack would only “strengthen Turkey’s resolve against insurgents”.  Several sources and media have since then claimed that the Kurdistan Workers Party, PKK, was responsible for the attack. Turkey’s government has carried out major military operations against the PKK since the collapse of a ceasefire in June / July 2015. Turkey is also targeting Kurdish YPG / PYG forces in Syria. The PKK and PYG/YPG are traditional allies.

So far, nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack that came as Ankara faces increased international criticism for its crackdown against Kurds in Turkey and Syria, and its support of “Turkmen rebels”, Jabhat A-Nusrah, ISIL and other insurgencies in Syria who are fighting Syrian government and allied forces. It is noteworthy that Turkey has a long track-record of false flag attacks.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davotoglu cancelled a scheduled visit to Brussels to attend a security meeting. Davotoglu said the authorities are looking into the information they have received as of late Wednesday night.

Several Turkish media also reported that a “suspicious package” containing another bomb had been found and de-fused. These reports could not be independently verified. It is noteworthy that Turkey’s government, over the course of the past 2 years, has launched an intensive crackdown on independent media and journalists who don’t fall in line with official government “narratives” about the Kurdish issue and Turkey’s involvement in the war on Syria.
