Toddler hit by train ‘escaped mum’

A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy is fighting for his life after being hit by a passenger train while playing near railway tracks.

The boy and a girl, aged four, were playing in the backyard of a home at Wallace, near Ballarat, when they wandered off towards the railway tracks to the rear of the house.

Senior Sergeant Neale Robinson said the mother of one of the children was in the backyard, but they ran out of her sight.

“It appears they escaped their mothers’ watch for a few minutes and came out here to play and the most unfortunate thing has happened,” he said in Wallace.

A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said the pair were “clipped” by the Ballarat-bound train near Wallace station about 11.20am yesterday.

The boy was placed in an induced coma and flown to the Royal Childrens Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition with head, chest and abdominal injuries.

The girl received a head injury, bruising, swelling around her eye and a cut to her leg. She was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Paramedic Colin Carty said the girl was conscious after the accident. “She was conscious and talking to us and able to tell us her chest also hurt, so we gave her some pain relief to help settle her,” he said.

“We aren’t sure exactly how she was injured, but on the face of it the injuries don’t appear to be too severe.”

The train driver was treated for severe shock.

  1. taxpayer says:

Mum should be in gaol. No fence on the back of the house.
She has other children. They investigate the poor train driver who is ruined for life. How about investigating the homelife of this poor little 3 year old darling she described as cheeky and mischievious which was a result of neglected upbringing. How many times has he been down near the track or how long was he there. We only her about her friend the policeman who is doing her talking. Will the taxpayers have to pay all costs and also a fence. She has received plenty of welfare. The mother of the little girl is the same leaving a child with this woman in the house with no fence. Hope government is not paying her child minding fees.
